What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are screw shaped titanium posts that are placed in the jaw to replace missing teeth. A dental implant can be used to restore a single tooth, or with just 4 implants you can replace an entire arch full of teeth! To learn more about our full mouth dental implants click here.

One of the main features of dental implants is their biological integration with your jawbone. After a dental implant is placed, your body will grow bone into the grooves of the implant, forming cellular connections with the titanium. This biologically locks the implant into place and makes it a permanent part of you – just like a natural tooth! This bond offers a secure foundation that is not possible through other tooth replacement options. You won’t have to worry about an implant coming loose while eating or speaking.

Dental implants also provide stabilization for the bone and surrounding teeth. After a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone and gum tissue begins to deteriorate. This can cause the other teeth to shift, leading to aesthetic and functional problems, and in certain cases a visible “sunken in” look to the cheeks and facial structure. A dental implant placed in the area of the extracted tooth will maintain bone levels and facial structure, helping you maintain normal function and appearance.

What is the Process for Getting a Dental Implant?

It is usually best to get a dental implant as soon as possible after a tooth is lost. In many cases, Dr. Walpole can place an implant the same day the tooth is extracted, minimizing bone loss and preserving the architecture of your mouth. Prior to placing the implant, Dr. Walpole will take a CBCT, which is a 3D scan of your jaw. This allows him to see any vital structures and the exact architecture of the bone. Once an implant has been placed it must have time to integrate with your bone prior to placing a crown on top of it. This timeframe is usually about 4 months. If your tooth is in an area visible when you smile, Dr. Walpole and his staff will fabricate a temporary fake tooth so that you will be able to smile with confidence prior to getting your final restoration.

Who can get Dental Implants?

Dr. Walpole begins every dental implant treatment with a thorough exam and medical history review. While certain health conditions or lifestyle choices may present added risks and challenges, most patients are able to receive dental implants. The longer someone has been without a tooth in the area the dental implant needs to go can affect whether or not dental implants are feasible, but with a good CBCT scan we can determine how much bone is available and, in certain cases, we may be able to graft bone to the site in preparation for a dental implant.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

We understand cost and budget can be an issue when replacing missing teeth. This is why our clinic provides an affordable dental implants solution right here in Wichita Falls, TX. We strive for transparency and aim to provide accurate estimates on the total cost of the treatment before beginning any procedures. This ensures that you won’t be stuck with any surprise fees afterward.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are by far the longest lasting tooth replacement options. Depending on the study you reference, success rates for single tooth dental implants range from 90-95% at 10 years. In comparison, another study reported that the success rate of a dental bridge at 10 years was only approximately 72%. While dental implants are not 100% successful 100% of the time, they do offer a significantly higher level of predictability and patient satisfaction than other tooth replacement options.
