What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a branch of dental medicine that uses medication to make patients more comfortable during dental treatments. From light sedation, which can make patients feel more at ease and calm, to deep sedation, which can render patients unconscious, there are many levels of sedation. Your level of anxiety and the procedure we conduct will determine the type of sedation we use. We can use sedation dentistry for various dental procedures, from simple fillings and cleanings to more involved procedures like tooth extractions.

Here at Bright Choice Family Dental, we primarily concentrate on laughing gas sedation dentistry, which you typically breathe through your nose. This mild form of sedation can feel more at ease during your dental appointment because it is both safe and effective. Contact us today if you are interested in sedation dentistry in Wichita Falls!

Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

Selecting one of our sedation dentistry options can drastically alter your life and dental treatments. Patients who qualify for sedation dentistry include those who:

Have Anxiety: Many people experience fear or anxiety while anticipating seeing the dentist. Sedation, however, can lessen these emotions and enable patients to obtain the necessary dental care without experiencing worry or stress.

Have a Strong Gag Reflex: A typical response known as gagging can make it challenging for some people to get dental care. However, sedation can aid in reducing the gag reflex, which helps patients tolerate dental treatments more easily.

Have a Low Pain Tolerance: Although sedation can help to lessen discomfort and can help decrease the sensation in your teeth and gums, some dental treatments can be uncomfortable. Patients with low pain thresholds or sensitivity to pain can benefit from sedation.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Your comfort is our primary focus at Bright Choice Family Dental, and we work hard to support each patient in creating a pleasant experience with receiving care.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is a colorless, odorless gas you inhale through a small mask that we place over your nose. The gas starts working fast to cause drowsiness and relaxation. During the operation, you are awake and able to converse, although you can feel as though you are dreaming. Following the treatment, we stop the laughing gas, and oxygen is given for 5 to 10 minutes to help flush out any remaining gas. The effects vanish rather rapidly.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is an option for many patients who desire to feel completely at ease throughout their dental treatment. Depending on your weight, age, and medical history, Dr. Walpole will choose whether to administer oral sedation as a pill or a liquid. You may stay awake or nod off during the procedure due to oral sedation’s mild to moderate sedative effects. You will need someone to drive you home after your procedure.
